Application Information

Students should begin researching possible off-campus externships at least one semester before the proposed externship semester. The process begins when an eligible student in academic good standing files an application on time in the Externship Department (see current deadlines). The placement does not have to be confirmed at the time of filing. The purpose of filing an application is to let the Externship Department know which students are applying to agencies in the field and to screen all applicants for eligibility before they send cover letters and resumes.

Once agencies and/or courts are selected for application, the Externship Office will provide referral addresses and contact people. Students prepare a cover letter (see link to “Sample Cover Letter”), prepare a resume, file the resume with the Career Services Office, and send the documents to selected placements. Often courts require a transcript and writing sample to be submitted with the cover letter and resume. The Externship Director will review your cover letter with you before you send it if you prefer.

Proposed placements contact applicants directly in whom they are interested. An interview is arranged at a mutually convenient time. If an externship offer is extended, students must obtain it in writing. Some placements prefer to send confirming letters. If it is more convenient, download Loyola’s “contact form” complete it and return it to the Externship Department. Students who have applied on time, are academically eligible and who present a written confirmed offer, are enrolled by the Externship Department.
