Student Employment

Federal Work Study, a federally funded, need based program, and Institutional Work, a LLS funded program, are available to upper-division students. Employment through these programs is restricted to on-campus jobs during the academic year.

To be considered for either work program, students must complete and submit the following applications/documents by the appropriate deadline (details are here):

  • Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • LLS Application for Financial Aid
  • Additional information requested by the Financial Aid Office

Students can not begin working until they are authorized to do so by the Office of Financial Aid, and may not earn more than the amount for which they are authorized.

Employment opportunities may involve work as a research assistant to faculty members, assisting in the Law Library, or assisting in one of the Law School 's administrative offices.

A listing of available on campus positions will be included with the work study contract. A work study contract does not guarantee a job, because there are a large number of students competing for a limited number of approved positions.

Summer Employment

Summer employment may enable students to undertake full-time or part-time employment in public interest law and to a more limited extent, some governmental agencies.

Funding is available for current first and second year students wanting to work during the summer for eligible public interest employers.

Students must be eligible for Federal work study (need based) to be considered.

Approximately 70 students work for a variety of organizations such as:

  • American Civil Liberties Union
  • Asian/Pacific Legal Center
  • Harriet Buhai Center Family Law Project
  • Inner City Law Center
  • Legal Aid Society of Los Angeles
  • Public Counsel
  • Western Law Center for Disability Rights
  • Approximately 10 of the 70 placements have been with government agencies
