Overview of using Microsoft Outlook e-mail is available here
This page contains some helpful FAQs and tips on using Microsoft Outlook. Check back periodically for additions. If you have a tip you would like to share, email us
1. How can I configure spam control?
Add names to your Blocked Senders List
You can block messages from a specific sender by adding the sender's e-mail address or domain name to the Blocked Senders List. Messages from addresses or domain names in this list are always treated as junk. When you add a sender to the Blocked Senders List, Outlook moves any incoming message from that sender to the Junk E-mail folder, regardless of the content of the message.
- On the Tools menu, click Options.
- On the Preferences tab, under E-mail, click Junk E-mail.
- Click the Blocked Senders tab.
- Click Add.
- In the Enter an e-mail address or Internet domain name to be added to the list box, enter the name or address that you want to add. For example, you can add the following types of addresses:
someone@example.com
@example.com
example.com - Click OK.
- Open a new web browser window, log in to http://mail.lls.edu.
- Click on Options, then click on Settings.
- For the option, “Move deleted messages to folder”, click on the drop down menu and select Deleted Items. (See the graphic below for an example.)
- For the option, “Save a copy of all sent messages in Folder:”, click on the drop down menu and select Sent Items. (See the graphic below for an example.)
- Click the Save button.

To quickly add a sender to the Blocked Senders List, right-click an e-mail message from that sender. On the shortcut menu, point to Junk E-mail, and then click Add Sender to Blocked Senders List.
To remove a name from the Blocked Senders List, on the Blocked Senders tab, click the name that you want to remove, and then click Remove.
To change a name in the Blocked Senders List, on the Blocked Senders tab, click the name that you want to change, and then click Edit.
2. Where is my reply email stored?
All e-mail replies are included in your Sent items. The icon in front of a message in your Inbox will change (arrow pointing to the left will appear on top of envelope icon to indicate you have replied to a message. A line of text will also appear inside the message toward the top indicating the date and time of your reply).
3. How do I backup my email messages and Address Books?
Click File - Export – Export to a file – Personal Folder file (.pst) – select from the list what you wish to backup (check the box to indicate you wish to include subfolders if applicable) – indicate where you wish to create the file. The file created is a compressed version of what you’ve selected to back up. Contact ITD if you need to recover data from the pst file.
4. Why shouldn't I use Outlook Express?
It is not configured to work with our email server.
5. When I delete messages, they still appear in my inbox. How do I remove or expunge them?
With the Sun Java connector used for all Law School e-mail setups, all deleted message should move to the Deleted Items folder in your e-mail server set up. Contact ITD if you need assistance.
6. What is the difference between "Sent Items" and "Sent"?
Sent Items is where a copy of sent mail is created if you use Outlook software on your office computer. Sent is where a copy of sent mail is created if you use web mail (http://mail.lls.edu).
7. Can I recall my email I sent before the recipient opens it?
Not in our Outlook setup. That feature is enabled only when connected to an Exchange server.
8. How do I update my Netscape style Sent/Trash folders to the Sent Items/Deleted Items format of Outlook?

9. All Microsoft Office documents sent as e-mail attachments open as Read-Only. How do I correct this?
When using Outlook 2003 and opening an attachment straight from the Reading Pane, the
document opens as Read Only and will always open Read Only while the Reading Pane is
active (for HTML and Plain Text mail). Turning the Reading Pane off appears to correct
this problem. To turn it off, click View - Reading Pane - Off.
