LLS Password policies
All LLS passwords should:
- Contain 8 characters or more
- Not be easily guessable (common names or the word “password” won’t be able to be used)
Passwords expire every 180 days (90 days for certain Exeter student information system access). Password histories will be kept so that the previous seven passwords used on a system can’t be recycled. See information below for detailed instructions on changing passwords.
Passwords are required to access:
- Novell network
- SWS (Student Web Services)
- some Class web pages on LLS servers (not TWEN)
E-mail [firstname.lastname@lls.edu -- important announcements are sent to this address]
- Changing E-Mail (LDAP) password

- Enter your e-mail user name (last name, first initial up to eight characters) and your e-mail password.
- Click the Options tab and then select the Global tab underneath and then select the Change Password link
- Enter your old password and then enter a secure new password and repeat the new password where indicated and click the Save button on the right.
- Be sure to check that you get a confirmation on screen that the password was changed.
- Keep in mind this password change will affect the password you use to log in to the wireless network (Cisco Clean Access).
- A secure password should contain a minimum of 8 characters comprised of a mix of numbers, upper and lower case letters, and (optionally) special characters.

Novell network [for accessing H drives, campus printers, etc]
The Novell network is set to automatically remind you every six months that your password is about to expire. At that time you will have a number of “grace logins” that will permit you to still use Novell without changing your password. Once you use up these grace logins, your account will lock which will require you to contact ITD to have it unlocked and to change your password. For this reason we encourage everyone to change their password as soon as you get the first reminder about the password expiration.
- To change your Novell password at anytime:
- Log in to Novell and be at your computer desktop
- Close any open programs and save open documents
- Simultaneously press CTRL-ALT-DEL
- Press the Change Password icon
- Enter the old and new password information where indicated
- Click OK
- When I am told my network password is about to expire, what do I do? What is a grace login? Changing your network password is simple, if you do it as soon as you are requested. Learn how »
