Computer Security - Updates and Patches
In addition to antivirus software, system updates are critical in protecting your computer from viruses, worms, hacking attempts, and data theft. These two precautions work together to ensure that known threats are minimized, and that your system works reliably.
Both Microsoft and Apple release regular security updates for their operating systems. You should check for security updates periodically, or setup your system to check for updates automatically.
If you have a PC running Windows XP, please make sure you are aware of the following three things:
Although Mac OS X computers are relatively secure, ITD recommends you use the automatic "Software Update" feature in System Preferences to request updates, or set up an automated schedule to check for updates.
To set your automated updates to 'daily':
- Open "System Preferences" and select "Software Update."
- Click the "Check for updates" box, and set the menu to "Daily."
- Click the "Check now" button to check for updates.
