Installing Updates to McAfee Software and getting Latest Virus Definitions
Once you have completed the installation process for installing McAfee Home Edition on your computer, you will now see a red McAfee icon in system task bar.
Please follow the steps below to get updates for your software and for getting latest virus definitions to protect against known latest viruses and threats. You should be connected to the Internet to carry out the steps listed below:
Step1:
Right click the
little McAfee icon in system tray and select 'Updates ' ![]()

Step 2:
A screen similar to below will appear, click 'Check Now'

Step 3:
A screen similar to shown below will appear, click 'Update'

Step 4:
Registration window will pop-up requiring you to fill in the same E-mail address and password that you used at the time of registration to sign in to the Update site. Also check the box 'Remember Me' to avoid entering password in future. Please note that if you do not remember your information from initial installation process, then you have to create a new account using the option on the right hand side 'Create an Account' and then follow this process from Step 1.

Step 5:
After you enter your E-mail and password information, the following screen will appear. This step requires you to install ActiveX program on your machine for getting virus definition and updates easily in future.

Step 5a:
The image below is what you will see above the window in step 5. Click on this bar to install ActiveX program.

Step 5b:
When you click the bar above, a pop-up will appear, choose 'Install ActiveX Control' from the menu.

Step 6:
A popup window will appear asking you to install the 'McAfee Installer Control'. Choose 'Install' on this window

Step 7:
A popup window will appear asking you to install the 'McAfee Download Control'. Choose 'Install' on this window

Step 8:
Following the installation of controllers, a window similar to below will appear with instructions for XP SP2 users to click 'Update' if the VirusScan Installation wizard does not start automatically.

Step 9:
The VirusScan Installation Wizard should start automatically and you will see the progress and installation window as below:

Choose 'Next' on this window to continue with the installation.

After the wizard has completed the installation, click 'Restart' to reboot your computer to complete Update process.

Step 10:
After the computer has been restarted, verify by doing right click on McAfee icon in system tray and choosing the option 'Virus Scan' --> 'About' as shown below:

The 'About' information should show latest virus definitions latest up to at least within few days of running month.
